Various Deaths2010-Dublin'I had forebodings of all the separations, the refusals, the desertions to come, and of the long succession of my various deaths.'Simone De Beauvoir, Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter, 1958Various Deaths relates to states and sites of change and transformation particularly in relation to gender and sexuality. In her influential book Gender Trouble (1990) Judith Butler describes homosexuality as a state of un-liveable passion and un-grievable loss. The implied cloaked immediacy of homosexual passion and the melancholy and nostalgia associated with loss are the thematics at play in this work. The photographic images lie somewhere between the internal and external life, between the push and pull of our desires and between the reality and fiction of the photographic portrait. The subjects identity cloaked and hidden, the viewer is left with an image of a more internal, less surface experience. The framed photographic images are delicate and small maintaining fragility while the accompanying posters express a more violent and ruptured experience using photographic montage and text as a means of eliciting multiple readings................................................................Exhibited; Gallery of Photography, Dublin 2010Photographic images printed on Hahnemulephotorag series of 9 3 X 250X290mm (framed) + 7 X 195X240mm (framed)Poster stack - 4 full colour posters available to take away - A3 (un-editioned)
