StatementHow we shape our cultural environment and how it shapes us is an ongoing balancing act of resistance and acceptance. Vastly complex networks of cultural data are relentlessly disseminated and cognized. The internal life of the individual in relation to their surrounding cultural environment is an important thematic in my engagement as an artmaker.I use my work as an opportunity to present alternative moments of representation by creating cultural objects that symbolize something of experience. Moments of transformation and the environments that both facilitate and choke individual revolution are recurrent thematics in the work I make. The appropriation and production of photographic images, slogans, texts, music, mass produced products such as posters, postcards, flyers, web based materials and particular social environments are some of the forms I exploit in order to create small moments of resistance, questioning and remembering.Throughout a process of research and engagement with a particular cultural moment I often involve other people, sometimes through conversation, sometimes through image making or creative collaboration. While this is vital to my practice I retain authorship of the outcome, while acknowledging individual contributions where appropriate. I find it culturally and politically important to remain the author of my own work, thus taking responsibility for my own cultural contribution.Emma Haugh December 2010
